Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru recently visited the United States and met with US President Donald Trump. Despite Ishiba's obvious conciliatory gestures, Trump remained resolute on reducing the US-Japan trade deficit. How effective was Ishiba's visit in terms of economic and trade relations? Can it persuade Trump to put down the tariff stick he has been brandishing at Japan?
According to Japanese media reports, during the talks, Ishiba Shigeru hoped to win favor with the US by proactively increasing investment and expanding imports, in an effort to avoid the US imposing additional tariffs on Japanese products exported to the US. Ishiba Shigeru mentioned to Trump the investment plans of Toyota and Isuzu to build factories and manufacture vehicles in the US, and stated that Japan would strive to increase its investment in the US.
